My name is Sheri Agers. I live in San Jose, California with my husband Carl, and dog, Gus. I am an elementary teacher who is energetic and optimistic!
When I first started attending Relay For Life in 2013, it was because my friend asked me to join her “Bust a Move” team. The event touched me in several ways, but it especially gave me a time to reflect on the loss of my sister, Dana. We lost Dana in 2008 to pancreatic cancer. I continue to participate in Relay For Life and am now a speaker for Voices of Hope.
In 2022, I found a lump on my right breast. I called to schedule a mammogram but had to wait 2 weeks. Through this experience, I learned there would be a lot of waiting. Five weeks after my diagnosis, I met my surgeon. I cried tears of joy when my surgeon said, “This is curable.” I would continue to hear positive news, such as the cancer has not spread, the tumors are small, and there is no cancer in the lymph nodes. I was told I would probably have a lumpectomy, but I ended up having a mastectomy.
I continued to teach and have been teaching for the last 22 years. When I am not teaching, I exercise, play golf, and read books. I also coach Girls on the Run at my school for 3rd – 5th grade girls.
I am thankful I am alive, cancer-free, and here today to share my story. Now, will you make sure you get your yearly mammograms? Thank you for listening and for your fight against cancer!
