Meet Our Voices

Ruth Fitzsimmons

Cancer has touched my life in a profound way.  I have been a caregiver giver many times for the last 30 years.

Every member of my immediate family except me have heard the words YOU HAVE CANCER. My mom, my sister, my brother, my husband, my grandmother, my aunt, my brother-in-law, my uncle, my nephew, a cousin and a handful of dear friends and extended family.  I’ve even lost two dogs to this disease.  So for me – cancer is up close and it’s personal!

Volunteering for the American Cancer Society and being a Voice of Hope is my opportunity to make something positive out of a disease that has taken so much.  My volunteering is a tribute to those I’ve lost to cancer, to honor the legacy of my mom and my sister.  It’s also a gift I can give to my family and friends who are survivors.

Being involved with the American Cancer Society is a gift for a brighter, more promising future!

My first year I ever Relayed it was 105 degrees and while it was HOT, it felt symbolic of the struggles of cancer.  It’s not always convenient or comfortable.

That night when I lit my first ever luminaria bag in memory of my mom, I sat on the track, and I cried, and I reflected.  THAT moment left an indelible imprint on my heart.  It’s been 27 years since I lost my mom and 12 years since I lost my sister and yet every time, I see the glow of their candle lit luminaria bag – it’s still impactful.

Being an American Cancer Society volunteer continues to be more and more relevant each year, both personally and for everyone who is touched by cancer.  Having the opportunity to share the Mission and the chance to help even just one person is so rewarding.  To see the significant impact our efforts make – I know we are making a difference.

My name is Ruth Fitzsimmons. I live in Petaluma, California.  Being a volunteer is my chance to honor, to celebrate, to inspire and be inspired. It’s my chance to reflect and to heal and my chance to help save lives!
