Meet Our Voices

My name is Edith Hitchings.  I live in Belfair, Washington full time & Depoe Bay, Oregon part time.  My cancer journey began in 1983 when I was 26 years old.  I was diagnosed with early-stage cervical cancer.  I underwent surgery and fortunately did not have to have chemo or radiation.  Early detection DOES save lives.

Fast forward to 2004, my sister-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.  Lisa passed away 11 months after her diagnosis.  I supported her during her treatment.  While spending many hours with her, she talked about her life and her desire to live long enough to watch her daughter grow into adulthood.  Sadly, that did not happen.

In 2006, I decide that I could no longer be silent about my own cancer journey.  I needed to honor Lisa and other family members that have been impacted by cancer.   I relayed in Bremerton, Washington for the first time in the spring of 2006.  I also walked in a 60 mile walk in August 2006 in honor of my Auntie who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994.

I formed my first relay team in 2007.  We have walked in two different counties in Washington where we were among the top fundraising teams.  I became an ACS Hero of Hope in 2013.  I continue to participate in relays and other events raising thousands of dollars for ACS and other cancer organizations.

I enjoy sharing my story at different events.  Remembering my family members who have battled cancer and honoring those who thankfully have survived the battle, is part of my way to raise awareness and bring HOPE to others.

I am a volunteer chemo angel.  I get assigned to people I do not know.  Weekly, I write them letters of encouragement and send small gifts while they are going through treatment.  It brings me joy to participate in this program
