Becca Lazinsk

The American Cancer Society has been in my life since I was in the 5th grade.  My name is Becca Lazinsk.  I live in Manchester, New Hampshire.

I became a caregiver at the early age of 9.  My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.  It was during this time that I was introduced to Relay For Life.  My mom was cancer free for a couple of years, but then it returned when I was 12.  She became very sick and the cancer progressed quickly.  We lost my mom in 2004 at the age of 46.  My mom was my hero and best friend.   Grief changes, but it certainly never ends.  7 years later in 2011, my other hero, my dad, was diagnosed with prostate cancer.   He continues to fight his cancer, but he is a survivor.

Being the daughter of two people who have had cancer has not been easy.  The one constant in my life has been Relay For Life.  We are in our 20th year.  Our team has raised over $250,000.  I joined the Event Leadership Team for my hometown event in 8th grade and became the Co-Chair my senior year of high school.   During my 4 years at Keene State College, we raised over $100,000.  I have held a variety of volunteer positions on the community, regional, and national levels.  I have met the best volunteers and staff that have evolved into lifelong friendships.  I see on a regular basis why our fundraising and advocacy work matters.

I continue to volunteer with the American Cancer Society because I remind myself that there are kids and families out there who need Relay For Life or other ACS programs, just like I did.  It is 21 years later – but I still step on the track every year.   At each event, I feel my mom and know she is with me.   A cancer-free future is ours.  I believe that together, we will make it happen.
