My name is Amie Barry, and I am a healthcare provider, a daughter, a wife, a mom, and a proud breast cancer survivor living in Northwest Indiana, just outside Chicago. Since 2018, I have devoted my career to caring for patients, including many facing cancer. I never expected that the compassion I offered others would one day be the same compassion I needed myself.
My personal cancer journey began in December 2023, when a suspicious area appeared on my very first screening breast MRI. I qualified for this screening after undergoing genetic testing due to my family history of ovarian cancer. When the biopsy came back positive, my life shifted instantly—from caregiver to patient. I went on to receive chemotherapy, a double mastectomy with reconstruction, immunotherapy, and I continue on hormone blockers today.
Throughout my journey, I found strength in science, in community, and in the belief that hope is something we build together. That is why the American Cancer Society holds such a meaningful place in my life. Their commitment to funding groundbreaking research and supporting patients is something I have witnessed both professionally and personally.
One of the greatest sources of joy and energy for me each year is participating in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Chicago. It is a powerful, uplifting event that fills me with gratitude and connection. Walking alongside survivors, families, and supporters reminds me that none of us face this alone. The sense of community the ACS creates is truly unmatched.
Being part of the Voice of Hope program allows me to share my story, advocate for early detection, and stand with others in the fight against breast cancer. I am honored to lend my voice, my experience, and my hope to this mission.
