In 2014 I decided to find out what Relay for Life was all about? I was very scared and hesitant to go because I knew it would be extremely emotional. I talked with several people that had participated in years past and they encouraged me to attend. I do not remember very much about the weekend as we came and went multiple times during the day, then we went back for the evening activities.
When Chris & I pulled into the parking lot I could feel myself starting to get nervous. As we walked over to the event, we came across the first luminaria … it was my mom’s … I was meant to be there. From this experience, the Luminaria Ceremony is my favorite part of Relay.
I lost my mom to cancer in January 2007 and then my dad in August 2008. Cancer has touched our family in too many ways. I walk in memory of my mom, Auntie Elaine Veres, my Dad, Auntie Lorraine Dores, Kellie Mudgett, Danella Putna, and Susan Lents, and in memory of my sunshine, Keri Toghia #keristrong. I walk in support of Scott Mudgett and many others.
In 2018 I was chosen to represent the American Cancer Society as a Voice of Hope. I have an avenue to now share my story throughout Southern California. I enjoy singing and have sung at several Relays – a way I can give back.
My name is Carrie Gomar. I live in Burbank, California with my husband Chris. To spread a little joy and kindness, I send out 20-30 greeting cards each week to those that may need a little inspiration, motivation, or just to make a heart happy.
Cancer has affected my life in too many ways …. and sadly, the list above is not complete. Come join me to help fight cancer: join me at Relay and/or make a donation – you are making a difference.
