– “We Relay because we want to give back to our community, and so many have been affected by cancer. The American Cancer Society gave us a way to do that through Relay For Life“, says Karen Woldahl, Relay For Life Team Captain Nucor Steel, Decatur.

At minimum, the Nucor divisions participate as a team at the main event, but many of their divisions have members on the planning committee. The employees participate and engage in different ways. Some help out at the fundraisers, where others may just participate.

Nucor also engage their business partners in activities.
– “They are our partners in the fight against cancer. We could not do as much without them. They sponsor us at many events, and even donate supplies and items we can use for events”, Woldahl explains.

Prior and during the event, the Nucor team do a lot of different activities, mostly fundraising activities.
– “We fundraise all year and continue to find new ways to engage our team members. We are all over the place. We do payroll deduct campaigns, host golf tournaments, fishing tournaments, as well as smaller events like bake sales or chili cookoffs. Every division does their own fundraising activities and we share with each other to learn”, Woldahl says, and adds: – “We also plan visits to hope lodges to bring food to the guests and host several survivor engagement events”.

Karen emphasizes the value of being involved in Relay for life, both for the employees and Nucor as company.
– “Knowing that we are making a difference in the fight against cancer is priceless, but it also builds team atmosphere and helps nurture leaders”, she concludes.
