It is with profound sadness that the American Cancer Society (ACS) mourns the passing of Thelma Suson—an extraordinary volunteer, leader, cancer survivor and advocate within our Relay For Life community. Thelma’s unwavering dedication and global impact helped shape Relay For Life into a beacon of hope for cancer survivors, caregivers, and communities worldwide.

In November 2024, Thelma received one of Relay’s highest honors: induction into the Relay For Life Hall of Fame. Bryan Sherwood, Senior Director of Relay For Life, was among those who presented the award and captured the essence of her impact: “Thelma’s compassion, vision, and tenacity have inspired global change and brought hope to so many—she truly embodies what Relay stands for.”
Thelma’s journey began in 2001 when she walked her first Survivor Lap just after chemotherapy—a moment that transformed her life and ignited her passion for advocacy. She went on to lead Relay teams locally, nationally, and internationally: from forming Delta Air Lines’ first Relay team in 2002 to expanding Relay For Life in Japan in 2010 and launching the Philippines’ first collegiate Relay in 2012. As a founding member of the Heroes of Hope program, now known as “Voices of Hope” in the US, Thelma played a crucial role in creating Survivor storytelling workshops that empowered countless individuals.
As we mourn Thelma’s passing, we reflect on the profound impact she had on Relay For Life and all who knew her. “Thelma showed us the power of one person to inspire hope across the world,” said Sherwood. “Her legacy will continue to guide us in every step we take to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.”
Thelma dedicated over two decades to Relay For Life. Her exceptional leadership impacted lives across borders, shaped programs, and built connections in the global battle against cancer. She was a mentor, champion, storyteller—and above all, a friend.
Our deepest condolences go out to Thelma’s family, friends, and the countless souls she inspired. We invite all in the Relay For Life community to celebrate her life and legacy on Facebook or Instagram.
