We are thrilled to announce that Relay For Life of Florida State University (FSU) has been named the 2024 Campus Event of the Year as part of the Pat Flynn Spirit of Relay Awards. This honor recognizes events that embody the passion, innovation, and grassroots spirit of Relay For Life.
This year, Relay For Life of FSU raised over $123,000—exceeding its goal of $108,000 and achieving 22% year-over-year growth. A standout initiative was the Power Hour Fundraising campaign, which generated over $7,000 in just one hour and contributed to record-breaking day-of-event donations totaling $31,800—double the previous year’s results.
Relay For Life of FSU executed the Relay For Life signature elements with creativity and heart:
- Celebration of Survivors and Caregivers: A catered dinner reception, donated by Madison Social, honored 10 survivors and their loved ones with gifts and a special evening of celebration.
- Meaningful Luminaria Ceremony: The ceremony featured stories from three local survivors, including a university dean, and a powerful slideshow of photos submitted by participants. One survivor described it as “the most touching Luminaria celebration I have ever witnessed.”
- Opportunity to Fight Back: Students were inspired to take action through innovative fundraising strategies, demonstrating their commitment to ending cancer as we know it for everyone.
The 12-hour event, themed “Roadtrip with Relay,” united over 60 teams from more than 55 student organizations. Highlights included a performance by the iconic Marching Chiefs and appearances by FSU’s mascot, Cimaron, adding to the lively, celebratory atmosphere.
In their nomination, their ACS staff partner praised the students’ creativity and determination: “The team at FSU exemplifies what it means to be relentless in the fight against cancer. From the success of their Power Hour initiative to their ability to overcome challenges, these students have demonstrated the true spirit of Relay For Life.”
