Cancer Observance Calendar
JUNE
We have covered a lot in the last few months (January thru June) regarding monthly Mission Moments pertaining to the “Cancer of the Month”. One of the most important things to remember is to start all meetings, etc. with a Mission Moment. It does not have to be long…just a short snip it of something ACS/Mission related. Below are just a few Mission related topics to bring up in meetings throughout the year in addition to the Monthly Cancer of the Month information.
We know that:
- January – Cervical Cancer
- February – National Cancer Prevention Month
- Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer
- March – Colorectal Cancer
- Kidney Cancer
- Multiple Myeloma
- April – Esophageal Cancer
- Head and Neck Cancer
- Testicular Cancer
- May – National Cancer Research Month
- Bladder Cancer
- Brain Cancer
- Melanoma and Skin Cancer
- June – National Cancer Survivor Month
See previous posts for specific information on most of these cancers.
Did you know:
Our Vision: End cancer as we know it, for everyone.
Our Mission: Improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, find, treat and survive cancer.
HOPE Lodge:
For cancer patients, getting the right treatment sometimes requires traveling away from home. Lodging expenses can present a significant financial barrier to receiving lifesaving treatment, and financial barriers are known to contribute to disparities in cancer outcomes. We help remove that financial barrier through our Hope Lodge program, lodging grants to local healthcare system partners, and a partnership with Extended Stay America.
- 500,000 Nights of free lodging per year
- 29,000 cancer patients and caregivers served per year
- $55M in lodging costs saved per year
- 6M nights of fee lodging to cancer patients since 1970
- 30+ Current Hope Lodges across the US and Puerto Rico
June is National Cancer Survivor Month
Cancer Survivor Network:
The Cancer Survivors Network provides a safe online connection where cancer patients and caregivers can find others with similar experiences. You can participate on discussion boards, join a chat room, and build your own support network. Visit www.cancer.org for more information.
April is National Cancer Control Month (we did not focus on this in April)
Since 1938, the President of the United States has proclaimed April as National Cancer Control Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness for cancer prevention and treatment throughout the United States. For many years, the death tolls from cancer have steadily declined, due in part to better education and heightened awareness about how to prevent certain types of cancer, recognize the signs and symptoms of cancer, and how to seek proper treatment. Screening is one of the most effective ways to detect pre-cancerous cells and provide early treatment.
